This makes a huge difference to your stress levels and well-being

Hello everyone! I hope you’re staying safe and sound at home, isolating. Staying inside has been one of the most challenging things for me. I love to be outside, and I love to be able to go wherever I want which is why, today, I want to talk to you about the importance of nature.

Forest Bathing

Forest bathing is when you go into a forest and breathe in all of the fresh, clean air, take in all of the lush greenery, and to just be in silence, listening to all the beautiful sounds of the forest.

Research has shown us that nature replenishes you in a way that just doesn’t come when you are exercising inside or meditating inside. The more you can be outside and surrounded by nature, the easier it will be to de-stress.

Sitting next to a window with a view of greenery

Now, if you can’t go outside, which a lot of us can’t right now, then one of the best things to do is sit next to a window. I sit next to a beautiful window where I can see outside. I can see the beautiful greenery, and that sits next to me all day long as I’m working so that I can remind myself and see the expansiveness of my backyard.

Sunlight Penetration

The amount of sunlight we receive also affects us and can improve our wellbeing. Decreased sun exposure can lead to depression so we need to make sure we are getting enough vitamin D to boost our moods and serotonin levels.

House Plants

Now, if you can’t get next to a window or have sunlight, then the next best thing is to bring plants in – houseplants or beautiful flowers. Greenery has been shown to improve task performance, so even having a plant next to you makes a difference.

Group Walks (when it is safe to do so)

If you can get outside why not think about converting meetings to walking meetings. Studies have shown that group walks improve wellbeing. Being in nature with people gives you have that social aspect, that social connectedness, vital to our wellbeing. It’s a double whammy to go for a walk and to be in nature, and also to be able to discuss whatever it is that you need to address.

I challenge you to think about it for yourself. Think about the importance of hacking nature into your world, especially at this time, so that you can improve your wellbeing and reduce your stress.

Dr. Elaine Dembe

Hi Louisa,
Your posts are happily welcomed in my inbox! Thanks for all you do and create.
I am Dr. Elaine Dembe, chiropractor, author and inspirational speaker. Today’s post resonated with me because I am privileged to have Sherwood Park in my backyard! For the past 34 years I have lived on Keewatin Avenue and I walk through our garden with my husband, open a gate and a feeling of gratitude envelops me as I enter the park. By the way, this pandemic has been a gift for me. I just finished updating my book Use the Good Dishes with a new subtitle “No matter what life serves up”
