The other day I received a phone call from a friend who was having some relationship issues. It was clear to me after hearing the story that the real problem was that my friend was lacking in self-respect and self-compassion. I cannot tell you how important it is to our well-being and happiness to cultivate self-compassion. It's beneficial to cultivate self-compassion now so that when you go through difficult times, self-compassion becomes your default.
I thought it would be helpful to share a past interview I did with Kristin Neff, a leading researcher in self-compassion. I conducted this interview with her as part of a virtual series I did on how to banish self-doubt. In this interview, Dr. Neff describes the three elements of self-compassion, how to build it, and how practicing self-compassion can actually build confidence.
